When Obama mentioned his proposed "spending freeze" during the State of the Union, it gave us the chills. Not because we are against fiscal responsibility, but because freezing domestic spending isn't going to cure the deficit and we all know there's not a snowball's chance in hell if defense spending remains unchecked! We are concerned that this focus on fire power will leave the American people out in the cold.
We have to admit, it warmed our hearts to hear Nancy Pelosi say she would only support a spending freeze if it included defense spending. According to the General Accounting Office, the Department of Defense spends more in budget overruns for weapons programs (almost $300 billion) than a domestic spending freeze would save over the course of a decade.
Won't you write to Senator Carl Levin, Chair of the Armed Forces Committee, and ask him to save our communities by freezing the Pentagon budget instead? Click here to send an email--which you can personalize, if you wish--to tell Senator Levin not to let the American people get snowed by bloated defense spending.
Think of all the programs that could be funded with the money currently being poured into war! Californians alone will pay $89.2 billion for total defense spending this year, money that could be used to pay for health care for 36,723,380 people, or the salaries of 1,281,492 elementary school teachers (to find out what the war budget could be paying for in your own state, even your own town, click here).
