Stand up to the NRA today!
December 18, 2012
Today at 1pm ET, CODEPINK and other concerned citizens will gather in the Washington D.C. office of Senator Harry Reid to urge him to support gun control and stand up to the NRA. Will you take a stand with us?
Throughout the day, please call Senator Reid and ask for a ban on assault weapons to reduce the number of gun-related deaths in the United States. We must emphasize that the time for action to ban these deadly weapons is NOW and that the tragic loss of life at the hands of an assault rifle in Newtown, Connecticut last week must not be ignored.
Please call Senator Reid at 202-224-3542 now.
In addition, you can tweet this message to Senator Reid and the NRA:
"Hey @SenatorReid, it's time to get out of bed with the @NRA! Push the #ban on assault rifles now! #sandyhook via @codepink"
While Senator Reid has indicated that he is now willing to discuss the issue of gun violence on the Senate floor, that is not good enough. He needs to publicly state his support for a ban on assault weapons, and use his leadership to pass legislation that will begin to control this epidemic of violence.
After the Aurora Colorado shootings, Senator Reid said the Senate schedule was too packed to spend time on gun control, and the last time there was a vote on assault weapons ban, Senator Reid voted against it. In August of 2010, Senator Reid was rated B by the NRA, indicating a pro-gun rights voting record. He has also received funding from the gun lobby. The NRA, the most powerful lobby in the US, has so far made no comment about the mass murder of schoolchildren in Newton, Connecticut.
The time for discussion has long passed; we need action now. Itís time for Senator Reid to finally stand up to the NRA. Itís time for him to protect our children, not their guns.
