The oppressive hand of the Bush administration is reaching women all over the world. In Iraq, women are dealing with increasing violence aimed at them by different groups jockeying for power. The new Iraqi constitution is being drafted under the eye of American occupiers, yet nothing is being done to protect women's rights and freedoms.
The new constitution could allow Islamic law (Sharia) to dictate over civil law. The Sharia is derived from the Quran and Sunna (the practice of the Prophet Mohammad). Historically, the interpretation of Sharia law is both complicated and controversial. Its application, influenced by patriarchal and conservative social norms, has often been executed unevenly to the detriment of Muslim women's basic human rights. Under some interpretations of Sharia, the constitution could legalize forced marriages, non-consensual polygamy, compulsory religious dress, execution by stoning as punishment for female adultery, and public flogging.
The Bush administration has sold out women to propagate the view that Iraq is successfully building its democracy. It is turning a blind eye to the new difficulties Iraqi women are facing due to the American occupation. As infrastructure has been destroyed, women are facing violence from extreme religious groups, American soldiers, and insurgents.
America's "liberation" of Iraq is hurting women. Here are some of the things being said about Iraqi women and the failure of the Bush administration to protect them.
