MLK Parade: Jobs, Justice and Peace Coalition

January 17, 2011
Los Angeles, CA

Parade officials complained that our contingent was too large, threatening to cut us off, to not let us march. Too many anti-war activists? Never.

We were 100 plus as the Jobs, Justice and Peace contingent at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Parade in Los Angeles.

Organizer Kathleen Hernandez with Vets for Peace responded to critics, “Isn’t it wonderful that so people came out for peace…”

CODEPINK joined Military Families Speak Out, Whittier Area Peace and Justice Coalition, San Pedro Neighbors for Peace and Justice, Topanga Peace Alliance, The Answer Coalition, VFP and more in the all day affair that traveled along MLK Boulevard. Hundreds of people watched from the sides of the streets flashing peace signs and shouting words of support to end war and bring our war dollars home for schools and jobs.

The Whittier crew danced along to a mix of MLK’s speeches, a VFP blimp floated overhead while up front MLK’s speech for peace and against the Vietnam War was acted out on a pushcart.

The San Pedro kids asked for more information about CODEPINK and arrangements were made for a school visit, while very small children joined in the pink, chanting along with slogans for peace, justice, jobs and schools, not war.

Thanks to everyone who came out!
