Liz Holtzman spoke the the CODEPINK LA community at Jodie Evans' house last Tuesday to talk about her new book, "CHEATING JUSTICE: How Bush and Cheney Attacked the Rule of Law, Plotted to Avoid Prosecution and What Can We Do About It".
Liz told us why she wrote her book and the legal issues it examines. She explained why the Constitution is fundamental in relation to historic events such as Watergate, and in keeping our government officials not just accountable but obligated to act when there are criminal offenses at the highest level, even the presidency.
She is one of the most knowledgeable and frustrated authors I have ever heard. She has been fighting since Watergate to make the distinction between politics and criminal behavior.
Liz explained in detail how and why Bush, Cheney, and many others have committed criminal offenses - twisting our constitution and the laws that uphold it to match their greed. This is a mode of behavior that Obama continues to float.
Unfortunately, because the current US president is letting Bush's offenses drift into history, Liz's book confirms that not attempting to prosecute the Bushes and Cheneys of our current political lives is having a devastating and perhaps long lasting effect that may take decades to fix.
When I worked as a waitress on Shelter Island during the summer of the Watergate Hearings, we fought with the cook to listen to the hearings instead of Hank Williams. I always managed to pick up a food order just in time to hear many poignant moments. If I were working the same job now, the kitchen would be silent.
The current proposed Congressional bill to ban the protesting of government officials is the type of action that comes from a First Amendment breakdown, and the indifference that Liz describes. But it is also an immediate and important breach that we can do something about. |
