Report back by Ivana Moorebucks CODEPINK Greater Dallas, along with members of Occupy Dallas, got into character as "Billionaires for the Ryan Plan" and greeted delegates and Mr. Ryan himself at the Texas State GOP Convention on Saturday at the Fort Worth Convention Center. We gathered outside the busiest entrance to the convention with a big sign that read, BILLIONAIRES FOR THE RYAN PLAN ...BECAUSE INEQUALITY ISN'T GROWING FAST ENOUGH and lots of smaller signs with fun, satirical messages ("Taxes aren't for everyone!"). The majority of the delegates got and appreciated the joke. A few missed it, including one man who was very upset about the sign that said, "CUT JOBS; INCREASE PROFITS," screaming, "That's craaazy - why would you want to cut jobs??" We Billionaires explained how it was important to continue to offshore jobs so we could make more profits as he exclaimed over and over, "That makes no sense!" Our hope is that he will talk about it with others and they will ponder it until they all realize the irony. Paul Ryan emerged from the hotel across the street from the Convention Center and, upon seeing us, scurried off quickly in the other direction. We ran after him, calling out, "Thank you, Mr. Ryan! Thank you! We love your plan!" but he quickly ducked into another entrance. We continued to entertain the crowd with our chants ("Wealthcare for the wealthy; Keep our profits healthy!"), our "Billionaires for Prosperity" song ("If our great big corporation...never faces regulation...we'll be brimming with elation...let's save the status quo!"), and our witty banter. We were astounded to find that quite a few of the delegates didn't know what the Ryan Plan was or even who Paul Ryan was even though he was inside giving the keynote speech at that very moment. We urged them to go inside and hear about Ryan's plan and then support it because, after all, it would just be so super for the 1%!
