IWD Gun Store Hug-InMarch 8, 2013
San Francisco, CA
On International Women's Day, CODEPINK SF's Nancy Mancias, Rhanden Kane, and myself (Sam Deer) headed to High Bridge Arms, the only gun store in San Francisco, to participate in a hug-in. Armed with large pink hearts painted with the words "Arms are for Hugging" and "Free Hugs", we set up outside of the gun store ready to give out free hugs to the public and spread our message that arms should be for hugging, not violence.
During our time there, we hugged the owners and employees of the gun store, as well as a few of San Francisco's finest who stopped by to pick up their new weapons. Met with positive feedback and many free hugs from passersby, we felt that we were able to better inform the public that gun violence is a serious problem and needs to be addressed with stricter gun laws.
At the same time our action took place, state Senator Mark Leno was holding a press conference on his bill that would stop future gun shows from being held at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. To further support Mark Leno's efforts and continue to spread our message that Arms are for Hugging and not for killing, we will host a hug-in at the San Francisco Cow Palace during the Crossroads of the West gun show on April 13.
