Berkeley, CA, Residents: Sign our initiative to refine Berkeley zoning laws for military recruiting! For more info call (510) 524-2776 or visit http://www.bayareacodepink.org/calendar.htm CODEPINK held a press conference outside the Berkeley Marines Officer Recruiting Station on January 30, 2008 to announce the launch of a ballot initiative to limit zoning for military recruiters. This is the next step in an ongoing counter-recruitment campaign outside this recruiting station. Carole Kennerly, a proponent of this initiative and former Vice Mayor of Berkeley, spoke at CODEPINK's press conference, along with Ying Lee Kelly, Phoebe sorgen, Sharron Adams (the writer of the initiative), and Bay Area CODEPINK members. Many TV and news stations attended the action, which featured about 75 activists throughout the day! Dana Dillworth's peace ribbons were a beautiful addition to the visuals at the action. At noon Medea Benjamin was scheduled to debate right wing talk show host Melanie Morgan, but Melanie backed out, unfortunately. Always creative and spontaneous, the CODEPINKers staged a mock debate with an activist, Kathy, standing in for Melanie. This was a lively debate with some excellent questions from the audience.
