Counter-recruitment in Pleasant Hill

April 15, 2008
Bay Area CODEPINK
Pleasant Hill, CA
CodePink women joined some very determined and talented DVC students in a counter-recruiting action at a cluster of military recruiting offices in a strip mall just a couple of blocks from Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill, CA.

This was the second action at this location. Both actions included tabling at the college and then a march, singing and chanting, to the recruiters' offices. The first march, last month, included high school activists, who joined in marching through Sun Valley Mall, (a major regional mall) chanting, "No more shopping while bombs are dropping!".

Though during the first action police came and explained to all concerned the right of citizens to speak in a public place, the Army recruiter didn't seem to get the message, and tried to tell the students that they had to leave. They patiently but firmly explained the concept of Constitutional rights to the officer, who claimed to be defending what he didn't understand, and when he threatened to call the police, they urged him to. Three police cruisers arrived, and again explained to the officers that citizens have rights.

Through it all we were entertained by some wonderful songs written and performed by Matthew Pullinger, a DVC student about whom we'll be hearing more, soon, and not just because he's promised to bring his guitar to the Berkeley Marines Recruting Station.
