Draft Beer, Not Kids

Draft Beer, Not Kids was a free all-ages counter-recruitment concert. The crowd packed into Luna's Cafe in downtown Sacramento on a warm October Saturday evening to listen to a fascinatingly diverse array of music.

DJ Galaxy started the evening off with electronic/trance music, featuring original beats. He then mellowed the mood out by singing and playing some original songs on the acoustic guitar.

Fayia Sellu, a journalist from Sierra Leone, poignantly and achingly related stories of his days reporting on war in his country, and of the current state of affairs there. He vehemently spoke out against the drafting of children soldiers.

Several attendees signed the petition for peace in Afghanistan. Also available were forms for high school students to opt out of military recruitment, as well as information on alternatives to joining the military.

Fayia then surprised the audience by playing djembe with DJ Galaxy.

In The No got the crowd on its feet with their deliciously danceable songs! The atmosphere was intimate, cheerful, and light-hearted. Pink balloons and melodies bopped around the room. Attendees took away more knowledge about not joining the military, as well as toy soldiers labeled with counter-recruitment resources.

CODEPINK would like to thank Art Luna and the musicians for their generosity in making this event happen!
